McCormick & Schmick’s Hooks Local Architect – 09/07
With plans to continue its growth nationwide, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants, Inc. has added Portland architecture firm, Baysinger Partners to its team of architects that work with the company on planning and design, construction document management and construction administration for restaurants.
In the past Baysinger Partners provided construction documents and construction administration to 22 other McCormick & Schmick’s restaurants. So, when the legendary restaurant duo called on them again – this time to design the new M&S Grill in Minneapolis, Minnesota – they were more than ready.

“Bill McCormick and Doug Schmick created a special brand of restaurant that incorporates not only their own creativity, but also reflects the uniqueness of each building and region they are in,” says Paul Reed, principal at Baysinger Partners.
In Minneapolis, there are more bridges connecting the city than Portland and this important element is infused into the design of the new restaurant. Artistic glasswork features area bridges, and behind the bar, the phrase “Land of Lakes” is scripted above a wall of glass tile.
“Every McCormick & Schmick’s restaurant is uniquely designed to create an inviting, original and relaxed atmosphere,” says Catrin Williams, director of design at McCormick & Schmick’s. “Baysinger Partners has been able to capture those elements in their work, along with the distinctive characteristics of each local market.”
And while the “Land of Lakes” is many miles from the “City of Roses,” much of the new restaurant has its beginnings in Portland, where McCormick & Schmick’s glazier, millworker and kitchen consultant are all located.
“Our firm is all about building partnerships with our clients, and in this case we were able to extend our strong relationship with McCormick & Schmick’s to their entire team here in the Northwest. Being close and working side-by-side only helps build that bond,” says Reed.
Reed, who is acting as principal-in-charge for the McCormick & Schmick’s projects, recently added Patty Ralston-Ellis, IIDA, Director of Interior Design and Steve Schwaeber, AIA, Associate and senior project manager to the team that will take on the upcoming work.
